Weed Control: Options With Benefits And Drawbacks To Consider

Weeds are not only an obnoxious part of having a yard and a home, but they are also a major chore. In some cities, having weeds grow too high or be too plentiful in your yard results in the city fining the residents with a "noxious weed problem." Whether you have that statute where you live or not, you probably still want to get rid of weeds because they can cause a lot of allergies. The following are some ways in which you can kill and prevent weeds as well as benefits and drawbacks to each option.

Direct Focused Contact Weed Spraying

This type of weed control requires that you take a herbicide around with a pump handle and spray every weed close to the base of the weed near the ground. Some weed sprays require that you soak the leaves above the ground if the weed is a tall-growing variety. The sprays poison the weeds and kill them within a few hours to a few days. However, you will still need to pull them out with a rake and toss them with gloved hands into a brown paper yard waste bag.

Whole Yard Weed Spraying

This approach has you connect a bottle of concentrated weed killer to a standard garden hose. When you turn the garden hose on, the water from the hose goes into the bottle, creating the pressure necessary to release through the trigger spout on the bottle. The spray is mixed with the water from the hose, thereby diluting it enough to spare your grass, but still strong enough to kill and prevent weeds. The one major drawback is that you never really know if the spray is completely gone from the bottle because the garden hose continues to feed water into the bottle, thereby refilling the bottle with more liquid.

Weed Killer and Fertilizer in One

You will need a grass seed dispenser to disperse this chemical agent on your lawn. Small granules are sprinkled everywhere on the grass as you move the seed spreader over your entire lawn. The granules contain weed killer, which dissolves and sinks into the soil to kill and prevent dormant weeds. The fertilizer in the pellets targets the grass you have growing and feeds it nutrients it will need to grow greener, thicker, and faster than before. It is best to use this "weed and feed" approach in early spring and late fall, or you will over-weed the lawn and over-feed the grass to the point where you will have to mow every other day.
